A client wrote me telling how addicted to sugar she was, complaining about how her meals were always packed with sugar. Then she went ahead to say she needed to overcome just her sugar addiction and she would get the body she wants. If you feel like she did, you are not alone. Many folks describe themselves as being addicted to sugar believing if it weren’t for that one thing, they would’ve reached their weight loss goals. Imagine this: if this obstacle (sugar addiction for instance) was gone? Would you still believe that “if you could get past this addiction, there would be no doubt that you’d reaching your goal,” or it isn’t just an excuse to stay stuck?.
If I told you, you stop your craving for sugar, would you be interested? Think this through. Shut your eyes and reflect on this. You mentioned earlier that if only you didn’t have cravings for sugar, you would have achieved your goal weight, but is this true?
Think about this questions: Would you change how you eat and if so how would you go about it? What would you do differently and if so how? What things would you switch up and what things would you keep doing? What you would lose and what would you gain? Until you figure out what you want, know how to get it and what would change (i.e. lifestyle change), you have to consider some many factors. For example, you may want to stop eating late, but, your spouse only comes home late and wants you two to have dinner together. That’s a hindrance. If you are the one that watches TV with a large bowl of popcorn, breaking that habit proves another obstacle.
You have to find ways to overcome these barriers.
Access what are your obstacles that stand in your way of getting your goal weight, find the means to overcome them, and you will be able to achieve those weight goals once and for all.
Believing that if jus one thing, i.e., sugar addiction got dealt with, all things will fall into place sets you up for failure, most especially if you like very sugary foods. Controlling your cravings isn’t an all-or-nothing proposition. You have to take occasional deviations into consideration. Here, I’m nit talking about those occasional differences that lead to weight gains, I mean in moderation.
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an excellent starting point, and it consists of an exercise known as Establishing a Well Formed Outcome. ‘Wellformed’ here refers to meeting all the criteria of a well thought-out outcome.
How to effect a Well Formed Outcome and get precisely what you want, here are pointers to creating a well-informed result:
- Express what yo want (not what you don’t). Example, “I want to weigh 65kg”.
- Adjudge if you can accomplish it (do you think it is achievable?).
- Determine the resources you have and what you are in need of (money, time, clothes, coaching, gear, equipment, etc.).
- Visualize yourself having achieved what you want, like what you see?.
- Put together an action plan for the achievement of your goal.
Although it might be tedious to figure out what you want, following this steps at the beginning will help to uncover potential impediments which had previously hindered you from attaining your goal. For instance, you decide you want to get a gym membership. And start working out daily but you just lost your job, or you don’t even have a car. This plan might not work for you now. If you end up joining the gym and you end up not going at all, you will start thinking that you had failed, but no, it was the plan that failed, not you.
The plan was not well thought out. In this instance, the reasonable thing to do would be working out at home or just walking as an exercise. And when you get transportation, you can rethink your original plan and maybe join a gym. YOU ALWAYS HAVE OPTIONS. It is smart to look at things from different perspectives, the sit-down and make up a program you can work with. Knowing what you want and how to make it happen is the first step towards realizing your goal.
